Is it time to downsize? Nothing stays the same
Is It Time to Downsize?
IDK about you, but as I look around my 1,800-sq-ft home with its big yard, I can’t help thinking… this is a lot of space for just me. My beautiful, intelligent, driven daughter is about to graduate from nursing school and plans to move out soon. I’m so proud—yet a little sad. I get it, though. She needs to spread her wings, just like I once did. (And yes, I still think I’m the cool mom. 😎)
Now I’m sitting here asking myself: What am I going to do with all this space?
Do I add this house to my investment portfolio and downsize to something smaller?
Or stay put because—let’s be real—moving is a hassle?
Lately I’ve met baby boomers and millennials who are ready to downsize because they simply don’t need the extra room anymore. Maybe you’re feeling the same tug. And that’s okay—our lifestyles change, and change is good.
Pastor Ed’s daily devotional reminded me that “for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Where we are today isn’t where we’ll always be—whether it’s in our home, career, abundance, or even in struggle. God is always working and has more in store for us.
I have beautiful memories in this home. When I bought it, I imagined more kids, maybe even growing old here. But life shifts, and I’m ready for something new. Embracing that change feels right.
One thing I’ve learned from real estate: having a plan sooner rather than later makes the transition smoother and less stressful. The market can shift, interest rates can change, and it takes time to prepare a home for sale or to find the perfect next place. Starting early means you can move on your timeline—not the market’s.
